Web User Experience / Usability / Information Architecture(GM)

It is not hard to draw conclusions about the importance of the User Interface Design in every kind of devices and applications. Today, everything has a screen and needs an interface: cellphones, smartphones, GPS, music devices, stereos and even refrigerators, just to name some.

These technological achievements offer us an unlimited number of opportunities and possibilities but also demand taking the responsibility of producing interfaces that satisfy the demands of this market. The user is not satisfied with just an attractive interface/look & feel; today the standards are much higher.

This situation compels us to know the user, his values and needs; and for doing so, we should have methodologies and practices, which help us to understand and translate these needs into functionalities or applications.

At Globant we have built our own methodology based on the following premises, which we apply in the projects of software user interfaces design with proven success:

  • Planning
  • Research
  • Modeling
  • Interaction Design
  • Detailed Design
  • Implementation

In this methodology, the most important design tasks, of the ones called users experiences (UX), are more related to define “user groups” through the description of “Personas” and their goals than to select colors and design buttons. We can think of a definition of “Design” associated to the conception, development and refinement of a key idea, and the interpretation of the needs of an increasingly demanding and trained user.

Other key practices of this process are Usability Tests:

  • Heuristic Evaluation
  • Low Fidelity Prototype Test
  • High Fidelity Prototype Test
  • Applications Test

At Globant we run these evaluations at various stages of the development of an application to discover, evaluate and solve usability problems as early as possible, in order to guarantee applications more usable and ultimately more efficient for a business.

Of course that the look & feel design is still an important, necessary and powerful aspect for the success of an application, but without a clear navigation that meets users’ expectation, it will not be enough to reach that success in the context of the Digital Age.

Variety of devices, new usage habits in the most unexpected contexts, trained and demanding users, and a competition that does not hesitate to sue the quality needed to go out there, shape the scenario opened to us; where only companies that recognize it and adapt to its needs by relying on consistent methodologies, and not only in good professionals, are the ones that will achieve the success of their applications in the Digital Age.
