• Globant’s Be Kind Tech Fund Invests in Web3-Based Platform Polemix to Facilitate Discussion on Hot-Button Issues

  • 31 Jan 2023

    Press Release

Polemix BKTF

  • The Be Kind Tech Fund’s investment will support Polemix in its goal to build and scale the first Web3-based platform facilitating discussion of important causes
  • The Be Kind Tech Fund also announced that Spanish venture capital firm Seaya and London-based entrepreneurial organization E2E have joined the Fund’s partner ecosystem

SAN FRANCISCO – Jan. 31, 2023 - Globant (NYSE: GLOB), a digitally native company focused on reinventing businesses through innovative technology solutions, announced today that its Be Kind Tech Fund has invested $1 million in Polemix, the first platform to introduce Web3 technology to the world of ideas and opinions. The startup’s mission is to upgrade how people support and oppose opinion leaders, disrupting the echo chambers cultivated by traditional social media platforms.

The Polemix platform enables influential opinion leaders across subject matter areas (including human rights, freedom of speech, feminism, animal rights, populism, and more) to create short videos sharing their opinion on hot-button issues. Supporters can buy Proof of Support tokens (POSU) of the opinion leader’s idea, which can also provide benefits such as special access to the leader. Proceeds of the POSU sales can be used to fund the opinion leader’s work or support a foundation promoting the leader’s cause, but portions of the sales can also be used to reward users who disagree respectfully on the platform’s comment section.

Polemix disrupts echo chambers by automatically showing fans different viewpoints on their leader’s opinion, and financially rewarding detractors who engage in smart and civilized debate. These kinds of interactions foster respect for opposing views and facilitate educated discussion of essential topics, while creating monetary benefits for opinion leaders and generating support for important causes.

“At a time when access to information and misinformation has become continuous and widespread, Polemix offers users a wide range of opinions on important topics, supported by reputable leaders and influencers,” said Guibert Englebienne, Globant Co-Founder and President for Globant X. “NFTs benefit artists, musicians, and other celebrities; however, most key opinion leaders today are not being compensated for sharing their opinions, educating audiences, and generating critical debates. Polemix offers a way to promote a respectful discussion encouraging users to consider both sides of an argument.”

“History happens when technology evolutions are harnessed to change behaviors. Today, Web3 is the new frontier of technology, and Polemix will leverage its innovations to change how people connect with the world’s most influential opinion leaders. Our platform will change how people support a leader’s ideas – instead of just liking a post, they can go further by owning and collecting those ideas, and be rewarded for their support. Polemix will also change how people oppose a leader’s ideas by creating financial incentives for respectful, intelligent replies,” said Ian Sielecki, Founder of Polemix. “For the opinion leaders themselves, it will be a game-changing tool to gather support for their work and channel the passion they generate into a new value proposition.”

Iconic opinion leaders who will be creating tokens of their main ideas on the Polemix platform initially include: Cornel West, bestselling author of “Race Matters” and social justice icon; Steven Pinker, celebrity experimental psychologist and bestselling author of books about human progress; Kishore Mahbubani, former president of UN Security Council and author of “Has China Won?”; Peter Singer, animal rights activist and Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University; and Shashi Tharoor, prominent Indian politician and former under-Secretary General of the United Nations.

Polemix is now available upon sign-up for all users, and membership levels are available in two tiers: standard-tier makes you an official supporter of the cause and gives you passive access to exclusive Zoom calls with the leader; gold-tier makes you the unique digital sponsor to that idea, provides access to intimate calls and the right to speak, ask questions and actively interact with the leader during those calls.

The Fund also announced new partners joining its ecosystem, including Seaya, the leading European and Latin American venture capital fund behind unicorns such as Wallbox, Glovo, and Cabify, and E2E, an ecosystem of groundbreaking entrepreneurs, investors, corporates, and entrepreneurial non-execs.

In 2021, Globant founded the Be Kind Tech Fund, the first and only corporate venture fund focused on supporting startups that seek to mitigate the misuse of technology. Since its launch, the Be Kind Tech Fund has invested in ping, a U.S.-based voice platform company that helps enterprises eliminate distracted driving, and established partnerships with The George Washington University and MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund, as well as investors including Riverwood Capital, IDB Lab, Nazca, and entrepreneurial organizations such as Endeavor, LAVCA, and Newlab. The Center for Humane Technology also joined the Fund as an advisor.

  • The Green Software Foundation Expands Efforts to Incentivize Decarbonization in the Software Industry

  • 13 Dec 2022

    Press Release

GSF

SOURCE: The Green Software Foundation

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 13, 2022 - During the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) meetings between Nov 6 – Nov 18, the Green Software Foundation (GSF) released new tools and resources providing organizations a coordinated three-step action plan to measure, learn and reduce their carbon emissions for the first time. The GSF also launched The State of Green Software Survey, the largest survey in green software ever to be conducted.

Software powers everything we do today—from our phones to our cars to our cities—so it's critical we recognize the role software and software practitioners can play in protecting our climate. Asim Hussain, Executive Director and Chairperson of the GSF states, "The concerted use of these resources allows technology leaders to decarbonize software at scale and achieve climate targets."

Measure: To measure emissions, organizations can now use the Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) Specification v.1.0, a standardized protocol to calculate the rate of carbon emissions for a software system. For example, calculating carbon per minute for a streaming application.

Learn: To address the changes necessary to decarbonize software, the free online Green Software Practitioner Course allows practitioners at any skill level to acquire the required knowledge and technical skills for decarbonizing software.

Reduce: To reduce the carbon emissions of their software, practitioners can implement several patterns from the Green Software Patterns Catalog, an online open-source database of green software patterns categorized by field of engineering, technology and domain.

The progress in green software made to date stems from the GSF's effort to facilitate collaborative action to identify and resolve critical barriers across knowledge and resourcing, while further improving standards of practice across applications to decarbonize software.

Until December 31, the GSF invites all software practitioners to take the survey for the upcoming State of Green Software Report (2023 release). Software practitioners at every level are encouraged to participate. No prior experience in sustainability or green software is required.

A few of GSF's steering committee members share their thoughts on the latest developments in green software:

"Organizations need to put green software at the heart of their digital transformation. It's encouraging to see the substantial progress the Green Software Foundation is making, by bringing together leaders from across industries to provide the tools and resources needed to help companies make impactful advances in the decarbonization of software," said Sanjay Podder, Technology Sustainability Innovation lead at Accenture.

"Global research commissioned by Avanade shows that 93% of companies are struggling to be sustainable and only 30% are currently taking advantage of green software principles to consume fewer resources. The new Software Carbon Intensity specification will greatly increase accessibility to the knowledge and technical skills required to apply green software principles, making it easier for organizations to reduce the carbon impact of their IT operations," said Chris Lloyd-Jones, Head of Open Technologies, Avanade.

"BCG X is a proud sponsor and steering committee member of the GSF, and we are excited to continue our active engagement in taking action against climate change. Our clients are becoming increasingly concerned with the carbon impact of their AI and software solutions, and we need tools and standards to measure and reduce their impact. Even internally, BCG is engaged in measuring and reducing our own software footprint as part of our global carbon strategy," said Matthew Kropp, Managing Director and Partner, Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

"At Globant, we understand technology's impact on the environment and share the responsibility to support projects oriented to making our products and software greener. We need to adopt a carbon-oriented mindset with a renewed design approach to sustain transitions and curb emissions in every action we take," said Santiago Fontanarrosa, VP of Technology at the Sustainable Business Studio at Globant.

"The Green Software Foundation is building out the toolbox for the software practitioner of the future," said Scott Chamberlin, Senior Director of Sustainability Software and Ecosystems, Intel Corporation.

"Publishing SCI v1.0 is a huge step since measuring is essential for reducing. At the same time, reduction efforts must be executed, and the tools released should help those actions. IT system emissions are non-negligible, and we will continue to work hard to reduce them," said Toru Shimogaki, Head of Green Innovation Office and Head of Advanced Computing Technology Center, NTT DATA.

"The Green Software Foundation initiatives announced today will improve the tech ecosystem for all by building a shared understanding and empowering technologists with best practices and standards to measure their sustainability performance. It's a great step forward on the start of a journey that is daunting in both how far we have to go, and how fast we have to get there," said Elise Zelechowski, Global Head of DEI, Sustainability, and Social Change, Thoughtworks.

"Being able to understand the carbon output of the applications we build is incredibly powerful. The tools developed by the GSF and its partners are paving the way to set a new standard in sustainable software, said Kim Chiu, Executive Director and Sustainable Technology Lead, UBS.

Please read our COP27 Book of News for more insight into the latest developments to decarbonize software.
